How to Build a Fire Pit. Outdoor fire pits are incredibly easy to build and enhance your backyard atmosphere.
  • Fire pit insert
  • Pea gravel
  • 36 12" rounded masonry blocks
  • Carpenter's level
  • Shovel
  • Outdoors

Warning: Build your fire pit at least thirty feet from your house and away from outbuildings, trees and landscaping.

5 steps on 'How to Build a Fire Pit'


Pick your location

Pick your location

Your fire pit needs to sit on a sturdy level base. Once you have identified your location remove any sod with your shovel.


Make sure ground is level

Make sure ground is level

Using your carpenter's level make sure the ground is level. If not level use your shovel to remove more sod until level.


Place gravel for your fire pit to sit on

Place gravel for your fire pit to sit on

Place a thin layer of gravel for the fire pit to sit on. Again, use your carpenter’s level to be sure it is level. Adjust with more or less gravel.


Build base for fire pit

Build base for fire pit

Make a ring out of twelve masonry blocks. Stagger the blocks on the next row and continue until you have three levels.


Place your fire bowl inside the blocks

Place your fire bowl inside the blocks

Place the fire pit insert inside the top row of blocks using the lip to hold it in place.

Hm it doesnt look too hard. has anyone tried it? would love to see a pic of a non pro doing it. maybe I can convince my husband and my brother-in-law to tackle it before labor day.

Rad idea. Seems easy enough. How deep do you dig the hole? Do the inserts come in different sizes? I can taste the s'mores already.
